This week's work has been interesting. Learning about the history of the Internet and seeing some of the current endeavors of Google was eye-opening (and I'm pretty sure that I'll be switching to Google Chrome very soon!). Getting some serious schooling on how to conduct more pointed and specific websearches was pretty fun too. I liked the features of Exalead and will probably start using it more than yahoo (but I am still partial to my Google searching!).
Being able to finish up work on these assignments from my hotel rooms in Chicago and Cancun this week really shows how beneficial online document creation, interactive meeting programs and the rest of the cloud can be for working professionals. Many of the key features of these online tools will also be very useful for teachers. These tools will allow for collaboration with student teams, inclusion of guest lecturers from wherever they are at the time, etc.
The informative movie on the history of the internet was very enlightening. I had never really heard the history of the internet and it was interesting to see how several different systems came together to create it. The idea a packets of information was not new to me but it was fun to see who came up with it and when!
I look forward to tuning in to Tuesday's class meeting from here in Mexico. I hope that my connection stays up.
Cancun - business or pleasure? Either way I'm envious. You are correct about online work and being able to do it anywhere, that is a bonus. I too find the history of technology interesting, more so than I would have thought. Isn't it interesting how much is out there and yet most people gravitate towards the same thing? Until this course I had never heard of Chrome, and now I've heard a few people outside of the cohort mention it. What do you like best about Chrome that's making you thinking about the switch? I like the incognito mode for browsing - especially when using someone else's computer.
ReplyDeleteLet me begin by saying that I am just a little jealous that you are in Mexico (as I look out my window at the snow and dreary gray sky...)! Enjoy your time there :)
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that you are proving / demonstrating the ease of use when it comes to cloud technology. So many people I know are not willing to give that change a chance. I admit, there are times that I'm working online completing forms or working on something and my connection fails--it's quite frustrating when everything gets lost! Do you find that you are caught between computer based applications and the cloud? or have you completely jumped in with both feet to the world of internet based solutions?
I also found Exalead very interesting and I had never heard of it before. I saw one feature, searching images by colors, and thought that was fascinating. Then, I went to Google, and found out that you can search images like that on Google too. The interesting thing that I noticed about the history of the Internet was that of the 4 or 5 system that it started out as, I think maybe 1 or 2 were American ideas, and one of those was as a military system. Imagine that! Americans initiating military innovation!
